Institute of Microbiology
The Institute deals with microbiological diagnosis of bacteria, viruses, fungi, helminthes and protozoa as carriers of infections in humans, and potential bioagents and their toxins within the control of microbiological quality of water, food and the living environment. Conservative microbiological procedures as well as advanced immunochemical and molecular-genetic methods are applied for such diagnostic purposes.
Five units make this Institute: Department of Bacteriology, Department of Virusology, Department of Microbe Genetics and Immunology, Department of Parasitology and Mycology and Department for Nutritive Substrates Production.

History
The very first traces of microbiology date since World War I, in 1916, when Ludwik Hirszfeld founded the first Bacteriology Laboratory of Serbian Armed Forces in small place Sedes, nearby Thessalonica. However, the Institute is founded within the framework of Hygiene Institute in the same period of Military Medical Academy’s foundation.
